Part III: What Gives You Drive?

Part three of the book Drive, talks about purpose. The motivating factor. The reason we spend the extra time, long nights, leave comfort, risk financial ruin or worse hurt your pride.

Don’t we all yearn for making an impact and discovering a goal or purpose. I always think of the line from Grey’s Anatomy, “It’s a beautiful day to save lives.” Does your team have this feeling? It’s a beautiful day to save lives, to raise pigs, or to improve the team.

This concept is the basis for Simon Sinek’s book Start With Why This concept resonates so deeply with what our society is looking for that his Ted talk about this topic has gotten almost 8 million views on YouTube.

Isn’t that just what we are after. Some higher purpose to strive for. Do we want to go to work for the 9-5 or do we want to want to impact the world? This concept deeply resonates with me as I went through the work to become a veterinarian. The word on the street is that becoming a veterinarian is no longer the right financial step versus getting a four year degree and just joining the work force. The cost of school is too high and the average veterinarian salary is too low. (Of course, these are averages!!) So why do it?? Because it feels like you are responding to a higher calling of helping animals and and being of service to your neighbors. This feeling is worth the organic chemistry, it is worth 8 years of college, and it is worth not having a life while in school. It’s worth it.

The sense of purpose is worth it.
